Toni Schneiders (1920–2006) is one of Germany’s most influential photographers. Through images made in the context of the “fotoforum” group and Subjective Photography, he played an important role in broadening and refining the post-1945 photographic avant-garde. Whether depicting a person, object or landscape, Schneiders consistently captured striking moments of reality; in precisely composed images he discovered the beauty of graphic forms in the most simple and commonplace things. Through bold cropping and an emphasis on surface and line, shape and structure, Schneiders created images of great clarity and humanity, touched by humor and empathy. To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of his birth, the F.C. Gundlach Foundation and Kunstfoyer Munich have created an extensive retrospective of this work, on show at the Kunstfoyer until 7 June 2020. Schaut her! (Look here!) is the exhibition’s catalogue.
