This limited edition contains 58 Algraphy prints on Arches 250 g paper of hand-colored pictures by Karl Lagerfeld. Released on the occasion of the comprehensive Chanel exhibition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005, the prints are the end product of an intricate creative process. Selected garments designed by Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld for the House of Chanel were first photographed on mannequins. Lagerfeld then hand-colored prints of these photos, before selecting an appropriate head for each mannequin lifted from a fashion magazine from the same era as the particular garment. These styled heads were digitally montaged onto Lagerfeld’s drawings and also hand-colored by him. Steidl finally made Algraphy prints from these layered creations.

Then Now is a unique record of the evolution of the Chanel style throughout the twentieth century and of Lagerfeld’s exceptional gifts as a master draughtsman.
