Oskar Negt
Oskar Negt passed away today in Hanover at the age of 89, after a long illness. Regarded as one of Germany’s most important sociologists and social philosophers, Negt studied under Max Horkheimer, obtained his doctorate in philosophy under Theodor W. Adorno, as well as completing a diploma in sociology. From 1962 to 1970, he worked as an assistant to Jürgen Habermas, and during the student movement of 1968 he was an influential mentor for the extra-parliamentary opposition. From 1970 to 2022, Negt was Professor of Sociology in Hanover. Never simply a man of theory, time and again he took a stand on the political problems and conflicts of the day, intervened and advised. Adult political education was a subject close to his heart and he tirelessly reminded us that “democracy is the only form of government that has to be learned”. For thirty years we were privileged to make books with Oskar Negt, to discuss with and to learn from him. We mourn the loss of a companion and warm-hearted friend. Our deepest condolences to his wife Christine Morgenroth, his four children and close friends. You are missed, dear Oskar.
