Maya Mercer: YUBA Ring of Fire
"Nigth of the Year" is Les Rencontres d'Arles' opening week’s unmissable festive event. A visual walk through forty photographic proposals projected in loops onto large screens, will take place at the abandoned industrial site of the former Étienne paper mill, exceptionally open for the occasion. Bringing together some of the festival’s favorite photographs, projects, and institutions, this great celebration of photography will feature performances, concerts, and DJ sets, with food trucks and bars on site.
Maya Mercer's Ciné Concert Performance YUBA Ring of Fire - The Parochial Segments will be part of this event.
"Eleven years ago, I exiled myself to Northern California, where I explored the local history and the current conditions of Yuba County.
In this series, invaded by red, everyone is brought up in a state of local desolation and share dilemmas in relation to their grounds. Most of the locals, the “Okies”, are descendants of migrants from Oklahoma who traveled there hoping to find the American dream. What happened on this land before? What is happening now through my own pioneer eyes?" Maya Mercer
