SOMETHING TO PUT SOMETHING ON is a jewel among Lawrence Weiner’s many acclaimed artist’s books: a playful and witty work in which the artist asks and answers the questions that have engaged him most deeply from his childhood into his maturity. A decade after publication of the first edition, Little Steidl offers a new rendition of the work, developed in dialogue with the artist and printed personally by Nina Holland on Little Steidl's Roland 200 offset-lithographic printing press.
The second edition is distinguished by an intensified materiality. It is printed on one of the finest cylinder-moldmade papers, Zerkall Book Wove, whose dense structure and tactile yet quiet surface allow the idiosyncratic rhythmic lines of Weiner’s artist-designed letterforms to come to life in a way never before seen in print. A refined letterspacing (kerning) throughout the new edition further supports the typographic characteristics. An expressive, almost rebellious, inking method was developed on press to emphasize the unique aesthetic and rheological characteristics of each ink. The result is an intense contrast between a fluid, highly transparent blue and a stiff, viscous red, the inks Weiner has chosen for the two voices in dialogue in the work.
