Ten Miles Round is Nickerson’s portrait of her adopted locality, the close-knit farming community in County Louth, Ireland. In portraits, landscapes and still lifes, she captures the complex, inextricable relationship between people and place. In images that embrace beauty in a muddy, imperfect way, her focus is as much the psychic aspects of community as the physical. While her subjects may seem at times reticent, reserved—here are both engaged and averted gazes—they are equally resilient: members of an environment dedicated to heritage in the face of relentless change.
