Anastasia Samoylova: Floridas
Where beaches and palm trees dominate the cityscape, where pink flamingos cavort in front of colorful house fronts and alligators stray into pools and front yards, Anastasia Samoylova (*1984, USSR) scratches at the dazzling facade of an American ideal. Starting from her home in Miami Beach, she photographs Florida in its numerous idiosyncrasies and contradictions. In her images, she shows the Sunshine State as a shimmering fantasy, a colorful vacation paradise and subtropical utopia, scarred as much by its deep political divisions as by the effects of the climate crisis. For good reason, therefore, Anastasia Samoylova does not call her project Florida in the singular, but speaks of Floridas in the plural. Parallel to the major retrospective of the pioneer of color photography, William Eggleston, C/O Berlin presents Anastasia Samoylova. Floridas and dedicates the first institutional solo exhibition of the artist in Germany to the project.
