Steidl Magazine No. 1

Welcome to the first issue of Steidl Magazine, which gives you a sneak peek behind the scenes at Steidl! Artists come and go here every day to work on their books, and everyone has a different story to tell—about their photos, the bookmaking process and all the unforeseen adventures that happen on a “normal” day in Steidlville.

In this issue Mitch Epstein takes us to the cutting room, elaborating on the editing process and the importance of sacrificing pictures, as well as the discipline it takes to let go of some precious ones when making a book. Editing is a crucial process and fundamental to the making of every photobook. Here you can see the image Mitch and his editor Andrew Roth were agonizing over, finally coming to the conclusion that it was not part of the discourse of the book. Harf Zimmermann, an expert at shooting on analogue film, takes us to “The Darkroom” and down memory lane to show how things used to be in photography and what they have since become. Film is now a rare commodity, valued and sold at auction with prices dependent on whether a roll was refrigerated or not.
