Im äußersten Westen Islands liegt der Snaefellsgletscher, an seinem Fuße versieht Pfarrer Jon Primus sein Amt. Doch die Seelsorge, die er den Menschen (und Tieren) angedeihen lässt, ist von ganz eigener Art. Was dem Bischof davon zu Ohren kommt, gibt Anlass zur Besorgnis: Der Mann repariere die Kirche nicht, taufe die Kinder nicht, beerdige die Toten nicht. Und was hat es mit der Leiche auf sich, die auf den Gletscher geschafft worden sein soll?
All dies zu erkunden, ist keine leichte Aufgabe für den jungen Theologen, der sich als Vertreter des Bischofs – kurz »Vebi« – mit Tonbandgerät und Stenoblock in die Abgeschiedenheit des Gletschers begibt. Er macht skurrile Bekanntschaften, hört sagenhafte Erzählungen und wird in krude Dispute verwickelt. Und er trifft auf eine »Wahrheit«, die sich nicht protokollieren lässt.
