Michael Ruetz fotografiert seit 1964. Bekannt wurde er durch die Bilder, die die APO in Berlin dokumentierten und das öffentliche Bewußtsein der Achtundsechziger-Generation prägten. In den sechziger und siebziger Jahren entstanden seine langen Bildessays über das geteilte Deutschland, dessen Osten Ruetz, als Westdeutscher, von innen zeigte. Neben diesen Bildern, die unter dem Titel "Deutsche Charaktere" zusammengefaßt sind, stellt das Buch "Sichtbare Zeit" Projekte und Bilderzyklen vor, an denen Ruetz arbeitete: u. a. "Leben und Streben" und "Timescape". An "Timescape" dokumentiert er in sinnlichen, großformatigen Bildern Entwicklung und Verfall von Land- und Stadtlandschaft in Deutschland, Europa und den USA.
