Cameras tell stories not simply through the photographs they produce, but through their myriad shapes, sizes and materials, as well as the human inventiveness they embody. This book shows cameras in all their eclectic glory, from the nineteenth century till today, in over 200 photos Henry Leutwyler made at the Swiss Camera Museum. Founded in 1979, the museum is home to one of Europe’s largest collections dedicated to the technical evolution of photography, and for the best of a month Leutwyler sifted through thousands of treasures to create his edit of cameras, film cannisters, bottles of chemicals, daguerreotypes, flashbulbs, the first iPhone, and much more. At no point does he set out to present the history of the camera in a linear fashion; rather, carefully balanced compositions and a light-hearted approach bring these objects to life, making them actors in their own story. Artifacts take on character, reflecting our relentless quest to capture the world around us, to understand, share, and transform it.
