First published in 2002, this is a new edition of Roni Horn’s handbook of identity, This is Me, This is You. With this inventively bound twinned volume, we have a book with no end. Peruse the 48 portraits Horn made with a point-and-shoot camera, and as you arrive at the last image, turn the book over and begin again: now with a complement of each of the 48 images taken a few seconds later, just minimally different, and presented together in the same sequence. Horn made these portraits of her niece Georgia Loy Horn from 1997–2000 when she was between the ages of eight and ten; Georgia moves playfully between different moods and characters, embodying a spectrum of identities. Through the dual structure of the book, Horn ensures that we can never see the pairs of portraits simultaneously: we shift back and forth between the two series, our memory of one image coloring our perception of its twin. Before and after, the self and other merge in this single and singular portrait—ultimately revealing the multitude in each of us.
