Magic on Paper

“BOOKS. An Exhibition of Books About Art and Art About Books”—showing a curated selection of publications by Steidl and Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König at Galerie Thomas Zander in Cologne—celebrates art and artists’ books as well as works exploring the medium in manifold ways. Books have always connected people across space, time and social divisions, providing an understanding of lives and realities very different to our own. They take art out into the big wide world—onto bookshelves in our homes, in libraries and all kinds of institutions. As lasting physical objects they allow us to appreciate and enjoy art whenever we feel like immersing ourselves in it.

With its in-house press and all bookmaking processes under the one roof, Steidl prides itself on outstanding print quality and individual design and production values. Whether photography, art, fashion of literature, it is Steidl’s goal to realize the dreams and goals of our artists and authors; to create art in book form.

The books presented in the Steidl pop-up store “Magic on Paper” are a personal selection by Gerhard Steidl and include classic and new photobooks, literature, art monographs and intricate multiples. An interview series with artists, authors and curators accompanies the exhibition, exploring the importance of books in their lives and work.
