Born in 1934, Oskar Negt was one of Germany’s most important social scientists. He studied under Max Horkheimer, wrote his doctorate in philosophy under Theodor W. Adorno and also completed a degree in sociology. From 1962 to 1970 Negt worked as assistant to Jürgen Habermas, and during the student movement of 1968 he was an influential mentor for the extra-parliamentary opposition. Between 1970 and 2002 Negt was professor for sociology in Hanover, and in 2011 he was honoured with the August-Bebel-Preis for his political engagement. In 2016 Steidl published his written oeuvre in twelve comprehensive volumes.
