For more than half a century Karl Lagerfeld was immensely successful as a fashion designer. As artistic director of Chanel (from 1983) and Fendi (from 1965), as well as of his eponymous lines, he was one of the most important figures of the international fashion world. Beyond fashion he created jewelry, furniture, musical instruments, books, toys, opera and theater costumes, stage designs, houses and tablewear. As if this were not enough, in addition to his accomplishments as a draughtsman and photographer Karl Lagerfeld was also a brilliant caricaturist. It was as a caricaturist that he explored political satire, a topic that had fascinated him already as a youth and to which he would often return, making it a permanent fixture in the monthly Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Magazine (and frequently in the newspaper itself). Here, beginning in 2012, Lagerfeld ironically depicted all manner of world political affairs in his “Karlicatures”, and loved nothing more than to parody those in power – from German chancellor Angela Merkel, to US president Donald Trump and French president Emmanuel Macron.
